Joiezabel told me I’d better post this here, and there was a threatening edge to her voice that suggested consequences if I didn’t…
The one-and-only-super-fantabulous Tom Waits is making the late night television rounds this week. Tonight (11/27) he’ll be on Late Night with David Letterman on CBS, and tomorrow he hits The Daily Show with John Stewart on Comedy Central. Can’t wait to see him and Stewart try to out-funny each other.

i hate to link to them but i must admit that pitchfork! at the disco has a brilliant interview with tom waits in which he discusses bacon and scarlet johanssen and other important things.
He seems to be promoting the hell out of the box set. I feel like I’ve seen more interviews with him in the past two weeks than in the last 15 years.
so did anyone watch it?
I did - Dave interviewed Tom, and he performed. (Some song off the new collection, which I don’t have yet, so I can’t tell you what…)
Dave asked about his holiday, and Tom launched into this long story about turkey vultures and vomit. Then, for good measure, he broke out the etymology of “dead ringers” and “graveyard shift.” Definitely a bit surreal.
So Tom on The Daily Show was not as exciting as I’d hoped. John Stewart was obviously intimidated by Tom, more so than when he had the president of Pakistan on. He kissed Tom’s ass a lot, and Tom didn’t really get to tell any funny stories. He was a lot more serious than he was when he was on Letterman Monday.
The performance was nice, though. He and a bassist did “Day After Tomorrow,” quite lovely.
i saw him on jon stewart too…i was disappointed with the interview. jon didn’t ask him anything very interesting and tom talked about several of the same random things that he did in the pitchfork interview - down to the exact same phrasing and everything.
the performance was really nice, although the network cut off the last part, which sucked.
I didn’t know the network cut it - I’d tivoed it, and I just thought the tivo cut it off… That blows.
