I Fight Dragons - Video Games and Rock Can Actually Work

Filed under News/Band and Industry Gossip and Cities/Chicago and Reviews/Live Show Review and Cities/Montreal and News/Music News and News/Previews and Events/Tour Dates by Sasquatchkid

Chicago band “I Fight Dragons” proves that having a gimmick isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s easy to be initially skeptical considering the band uses the old school Nintendo video game system’s low-fi MIDI sounds to provide some of its music and they use old NES accessories like the Power Pad and the Power Glove during live shows, but this is anything but nerd-core with lame comic-book lyrics.

A listen to their new EP “Cool is Just a Number” reveals that IFD has a power-pop sensibility that recalls Weezer before they started sucking, and a bit of the electronic sounds of Postal Service mixed in. If you don’t believe me, check out this great video for their song “Money.” It’s got cool references to Super Mario Brothers, Pac-Man and Pole Position and the chorus has stuck in my head for the past three days.

I’d totally recommend checking out “Cool is Just a Number,” which is available for free on their website (when you sign-up for their newsletter). They’re also performing at the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue, in Chicago on May 22nd at 7 p.m.

Warped Tour ‘09 (Remember that?) Tickets Go On Sale

Filed under Events/Music Festivals and News/Music News and News/Previews and Events/Tour Dates by Sasquatchkid

Bring me your tired, your poor punk rockers, your huddled Chuck Taylor wearing masses and send them to the Warped Tour. Tickets went on sale yesterday.

In my mind I kind of associate the Warped Tour with Hot Topic, a relic of the mall-punk 90’s but here it is still going in 2009 - its 15th year anniversary. Not that it hasn’t had it’s moments – I went once in the late 90’s in Kansas City and enjoyed seeing NOFX, Bad Religion, Propaghandi, the Deftones and others despite the high ticket prices, the sweltering heat, and all of the testosterone-fueled idiots who wanted to mosh (kicking up a ridiculous amount of dust in the process) no matter who was playing.

Warped Tour '09 - 15 Years Old And Still Going And Going And Going...

Warped Tour

Still, I find it a bit surreal that the same bands – Bad Religion, Less Than Jake, Flogging Molly, etc. are still anchoring a lineup featuring lots of no names (The Devil Wears Prada is now a book, movie and punk band?). Hopefully we don’t see these guys in five years when they could become the punk rock equivalent of a Journey – Survivor – REO Speedwagon state fair tour.

Still, the big concert tours have slowly given way to big destination two or three day festivals (Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Sasquatch, etc.) so this might be the only way you get to see a few decent bands outdoors.

James Touring the US Oh My God!

Filed under News and Events/Tour Dates by joiezabel

I’m going to go have a heart attack now, the good kind. Even though i just saw them in London in April, this news makes me giddy. I cannot even tell you how much I love this band, or how awesome their live show is, or how glad I am that they are back together and touring. And Hey Ma is a kickass album too.

Official press release:

We are pleased to announce that James will be embarking on a three week tour of North America this autumn to coincide with the US release of Hey Ma on the 16th of September. The tour will include concerts across the USA as well as Canada and their first ever visit to Mexico. More ticketing info will be released over the coming weeks. Keep an eye on www.wearejames.com for the details.

The tour will begin on September 15th in Boston, Massachusetts, the day before the US release of the album - their first in 7 years. In addition to their headline tour, the band will make a stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as special guests to Squeeze on the 19th.

Eric Bachmann Touring, Kinda

Filed under Events/Tour Dates by joiezabel

Broadcast straight from the top-secret Eric Bachmann headquarters, exact location unknown:

Eric’s heading out to the frigid Northeast to warm your nights supporting Neko Case.
He’ll also be headlining his very own show at Southpaw.

01/25 Tarrytown, NY @ Tarrytown Music Hall
01/26 Ithaca, NY @ The State Theater
01/27 Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground Ballroom
01/30 Brooklyn, NY @ Southpaw
01/31 Albany, NY @ The Egg
02/01 Providence, RI @ Lupo’s
02/02 Northampton, MA @ Calvin Theater

All shows will be solo, get it while you can!

You probably know Eric from his early 90’s band Archers of Loaf, which ROCKED, or his fortunately-still-together-but-unfortunately-not-recording-or-something band Crooked Fingers, which also rock in a totally neil diamond/bruce springsteen kind of way. Well, his solo album To the Races, which came out in 2006 on (gulp) Saddle Creek isn’t bad either.

My point here is that he kind of sucks for not touring past the Northeast so I can see him again. That is all.

Replicator US tour blog - Day 5 - for Replicator, there was no room!

Hi everybody, i’m Conan Neutron, I play in the band Replicator from Oakland, CA. There are many tour diaries, but this one is mine. Thanks to the SSC gang for asking us to do it here.

Since we haven’t posted any pictures up yet, I figured i’d put a couple up from Luke Holwerda at our Phoenix show… these are from a good live review by Matt Neff in the Phoenix New Times.

Due to the lack of an Oklahoma show we decided to stay in Austin another day. The idea being that we would try to hop on another show. Read more »

Replicator on tour beginning this Friday

Filed under Events/Tour Dates by hotshotrobot

ReplicatorThe prettiest noisemakers in Oakland (ok, in a town where the Raiders play that’s not saying much, but work with me here), Replicator, are taking it to the streets for three weeks beginning this Friday, August 17th, at The Smell in Los Angeles. The three-piece sample-laden surgical riffmasters (it’s early in the morning, so i can’t come up with anything better than shlock like “riffmasters”–sorry Conan, Ben, and Chris) are touring behind their latest full-length release Machines Will Always Let You Down, a title that implies that the sexbot Ben builds in the song “Delicious Fornicake” isn’t quite up to snuff. Don’t fret, Ben–i’m sure some other nerded-out sci-fi noise band you’ll run into on tour has a robot left over from the days when they were singing about building robots to bang.

Tour dates! They have tour dates! Log in with your fist:

Item of note: Italicized spots represent places where the band is still looking to fill out some gaps in the tour; if you can help, email guitarist Conan Neutron at neutron@replicator5000.com. Item of note the Second: Chicago’s rock show at the Empty Bottle on Sunday, Sept. 2 with IfIHadAHiFi and Bear Claw is presented by our pals at 312unes.com! Sept. 2 may be a Sunday, but it’s the Sunday before Labor Day, which makes it a Saturday, so you Chicago fools have no reason to skip out on this. Replicator will tear your face off, kiss it, and staple it back on upside-down like they’re Si Coltrane from Preacher or some shit. Assloads of respect.

Are you ready for some darkness? Turbonegro announce US Tour Dates

Filed under News/Music News and Events/Tour Dates by hotshotrobot

TurbonegroIt’s hard to write a post announcing an impending Turbonegro US tour without slumming it in the title. Seriously, “Are you ready for some darkness?” That song title has probably been used by dozens upon dozens of music bloggers/writers/”journalists” over the years for the same tour date posts year after year. But heck, what else am i gonna go with? “Get it On?” “Good Head/Great Tour?” “Motherfucking Touring Tonight?” Turbonegro Hate the Kids; Love Touring?” All lame.

But who cares? The point is that Norway’s kings (queens?) of hedonism, the glam-punkers that black metal church burners Mayhem referred to as “the most evil band in the world,” TURBOfuckingNEGRO, are BACK. Hank, Happy Tom, and the (euro)boys will be stateside for nearly a month promoting their new album Retox (which will be released in the USA on August 14th). Here’s hoping that Retox isn’t as completely worthless as their last release, Party Animals, because frankly, i was sort of hoping there was no album tied to this tour. I sort of want as little new material as possible. Stick with the classics, guys. Please?

Despite the severe dropoff in quality attached to Party Animals (and hey, maybe Retox will be a return to form! Knock on wood!), Turbonegro are quite possibly the greatest live band in the world. Yes, i realize i tend to say that about Melt-Banana and the pAper chAse as well, but i genuinely mean it when referring to any of those bands. A live Turbonegro set featuring the hits from Apocalypse Dudes and Ass Cobra will change your life. But don’t take my word for it:

9/19 - Metro, Chicago, IL
9/20 - Smalls, Detroit, MI
9/21 - The Grog Shop, Cleveland, OH
9/22 - Phoenix Concert Theater, Toronto
9/24 - Paradise, Boston, MA
9/25 - Nokia Theater Times Square, NYC
9/26 - Black Cat, Washington, DC
9/28 - Ziggy’s, Winston-Salem, NC
9/29 - Center Stage, Atlanta, GA
10/01 - Granada Theater, Dallas, TX
10/02 - Emo’s, Austin, TX
10/04 - Brickhouse Theater, Phoenix, AZ
10/05 - HOB, San Diego, CA
10/06 - Downtown LA, Los Angeles, CA
10/07 - Henry Ford Theater, Los Angeles
10/08 - Slims, San Francisco, CA
10/10 - Showbox, Seattle, WA
10/11 - Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver
10/12 - Roseland Ballroom, Portland, OR

Finally, according to the band’s website, they are “looking for Turbojugends in each territory to get to us via Camilla and start working on after shows parties for each city.” Get on it, American Punk Rock Boys and New Wave Hooker Girls. I’ll see you at the Metro (provided the Metro’s website ever gets ticket info posted–hurry up, FIBs!).
