high fidelity : the musical!?

Filed under Cities/Boston and Cities/New York City and News/Previews and News/Random Musings by amber

no, seriously. broadway.com reports that the beloved novel and film adaption high fidelity, written by nick hornby, has been turned into a broadway musical. a pre-production world premiere of the musical will run September 26-October 22 at the colonial theatre in boston, and this ghastly thing will hit the broadway stage in early november.

in the true spirit of high fidelity :

top 5 reasons why this musical sucks ass

1. when new york mag interviewed will chase, the actor to play rob, and asked him what music he liked, he replied: “i’ve seen rush, like, seven times.”

2. rob does not sing. he is an angsty record shop owner who gets dumped by his girlfriend. people like this (i.e. people like us) do not sing their conversations while music, unchosen by him/her/us, plays insipidly in the background.

3. i just remembered the dancing. is this going to have dancing and singing?! blasphemy! there had better not be fucking dancing, that’s all i’m saying. i just had a nightmare image of rob doing a little soft shoe with accompanying jazz hands in the punk aisle of the record store. disgusting.

4. doesn’t the very idea that this musical exists go against the music snobbery ideals the characters in the book/film uphold? did hornby agree to this? are we being mocked??

5. the songs, to come full circle, suck ass. see for yourself.
