Life made him tough. Love made him strong. Music made him hard.

Let’s Du-et…We had Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story at the theater-pub I work at last month and it was one of the rare movies our whole staff was sad to see go. I’ve been waiting until it came out on DVD to tell you all to check it out. That day has arrived, my friends.

This is not the funniest movie ever made, but but if you’re at all a music fan, this rock n’ roll biopic spoof is kind of a must-see. Here’s why:

- Judd Apatow’s script spoofs Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Jim Morrison.

-The songs are actually funny and actually good songs.

- Jack White plays Elvis like you’ve never seen Elvis played before (though probably close to what he really was like.)

- The Beatles: Jack Black (Paul), Jason Schwartzman (Ringo), Justin-I’m a Mac-Long (George), Paul Rudd (John). Inter-Beatles bickering. Acid trip. Watch for this scene alone. I’ve got a song about an octopus.

- After Dewey gets into acid, he makes an epically weird album that never finishes. He wants “an army of didgeridoos” and his band mate (SNL’s Chris Parnell) to “learn to play the fucking theremin!” Two words: Pet. Sounds.

- Dewey becomes relevant again after a rapper named L’il Nutzzack samples Walk Hard. (Yes, there are lots of ‘Cox’ jokes in this movie, but we’re talking about the music here.)

-
Eddie Vedder as himself presents Dewey with a lifetime acheivement award, followed by a Lyle Lovett/Jewel duet of Walk Hard.

For being kind of a dumb comedy, it’s pretty smart. And quotable. See it.

rvm.jpgThis is the big summer edition. It’s pretty epic. They use STP’s Vaseline as the opening preview song, which is too bad. There is some really good stuff on this one. Click more to keep reading.

5 Questions with New Bloods

Filed under Interviews/Five Questions by leahpants

1515944691_m.jpgPortland’s New Bloods are amazing. Drums, bass, and violin in tow, they rock out riot-grrl/dance-party style. Their first full-length album, “The Secret Life” is coming out on Kill Rock Stars this Tuesday. They’re playing a label showcase with Panther and Horse Feathers of which I will be in attendance before heading out on a tour of the mid-west, east coast, and then Europe.

Bass player Cassia, my coworker and good friend (yes, we rep for our friends around here. big deal.) has taken time out from working, rehearsing, and planning a three month tour and answered The Five Questions.

1. when historians listen to your most recent CD 1000 years from now, what will they say?
>>>Well, I honestly am not so sure there will be anyone living on earth in 1000 years, let alone copies of our album still in existence, due to the great catastrophes that are only bound to occur…but, I guess if that were to happen, that they’d say, “What is this beautiful noise? We must find these ladies graves and resurrect them from the dead with our crazy technology so they can play for us in the future.”

2. if you could play a show with any band/musician living or dead, who would you pick and why?
>>>I think we would pick either Sun Ra or Fela Kuti. Everything about their performance, the music, the dancing, the energy, would just be amazing to see and be a part of.

3. what is the strangest band-related dream (one of) you have had?
>>>For me, I think it’s like dreaming about work. You just dream about the things you actually do during the day. So, when I dream about New Bloods, it’s us sitting in the car, driving for hours, farting, smoking weed and making jokes.

4. what do your fans look like?
>>>Like wonderful people. They all have special light in their eyes and are the kindest, sweetest, most loving. These are emotional people we’re talking about. Their eyes get moist.

5. what bullshit do you run into at most every show that makes you think “man, this bullshit again?”

>>>Well, loading, unloading, loading and unloading is always a pain. And, we are always losing or breaking equipment. On our last tour, during our first two shows, someone broke the tambourine so then we were out one for the rest of the tour. It’s cool though.

Rock Video Monthly: May 1994

I’m reviewing these VHS tapes full of old alternative videos from 1994. See last week’s here.

Being 10 at the time, some of these bands I’d heard of, some I’ve since heard of, and a few are new to me. Where there is a youtube video I link it so you can share in some nostalgia and ridicule with me. Here we go:  Read more »

New Recurring Post Alert: Rock Video Monthly 1994

416efrhah5l_aa280_.jpgA couple years ago at “the bins” I got my dirty little hands on a stack of Rock Video Monthly: Alternative Releases vhs tapes from 1994. They were put out by Warner Music and I assume were meant for college tv stations and the like. I’ve occasionally put them on mute during parties and watched one or two on those nights when you’re really scraping for stoner entertainment, but I’ve never sat down and really paid attention to each one of them.

So, over the next few…however long it takes me, I’ll be sitting down and watching each video of each tape chronologically, offering my thoughts. If there’s a video on youtube, I’ll link to it so you can share the experience. This oughta be good. March ‘94 after the jump. Read more »
